Bacterial identification of pure isolates by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) includes one subculture and either the direct smear or formic acid extraction test method. If an identification is not achieved with the direct smear method, the formic acid extraction will be performed for an additional charge. Additional charges will apply if the submission contains mixed bacterial isolates or if anaerobic organisms are submitted for identification.
Identification of bacterial isolates by MALDI-TOF isolated from clinical specimens is the standard operating procedure for the laboratory, and is included in Aerobic Culture and Sensitivity Testing, Anaerobic Culture, Blood cultures, Bovine Mastitis Culture, and Pathogen Screens. For the identification of aquatic bacterial pathogens, please refer to Aquatic Bacterial Pathogen Screening for more information.
Transfer forms must be completed prior to the submission of pure bacterial isolates. Please contact laboratory (dsbacteriology@upei.ca) to arrange for submission.
