The Baermann technique allows detection of nematode larvae in feces. It can detect lungworm larvae of large and small ruminants, donkeys, dogs, and cats, Angiostrongylus vasorum (French Heartworm) larvae, and Stronglyoides stercoralis larvae.

Fresh feces must be collected to avoid confusion with free-living nematodes. Submit three fecal samples collected over three consecutive days from cats and dogs. Collect cattle feces from the rectum. Preserved or frozen samples are not suitable for this method.
