The Regional Diagnostic Virology Services (RDVS) is the Virology section of AVC Diagnostic Services. It is a special entity of AVC Diagnostic Services as it is a separate cost center with unique functions. It was established in 1988 by the four Atlantic Canadian provinces through their provincial veterinary diagnostic laboratories to provide advanced virology services in the Atlantic region through AVC.

The laboratory provides diagnostic virology services to provincial laboratories, veterinary pathologists, veterinary practitioners, the AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital, researchers of the AVC and other universities in Atlantic Canada. The laboratory assays samples submitted by veterinarians to detect the presence of viruses in a wide range of domestic animal species, furbearing animals, wildlife and aquatic species.

The services provided by RDVS include the following:

  • Detection of virus antigen by Fluorescent Antibody Test (FAT) and ELISA.
  • Detection of virus genome using PCR, RT-PCR, nested PCR and Real Time PCR, and nucleic sequencing/phylogenetic analysis.
  • Detection of virus antibodies using virus neutralization test (VN), indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and ELISA.
  • Virus isolation (VI).

The laboratory is accredited by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for ELISA testing for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) and Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (EBL).
