The PCR test detects Streptococcus equi subsp. equi bacterial DNA and is used primarily to identify non-clinical carriers, but can also be used in horses with clinical disease.  Nasopharyngeal washes, nasal swabs or guttural pouch washes are appropriate samples for the S. equi PCR.  Nasal swabs are not suggested for horses that are not currently experiencing nasal discharge.
